THE TOWN - Castelfarnco di Sopra

The old ‘road of the seven bridges’ - “Sette ponti” winds itself between the river Arno and the ‘Pratomagno’, starting from the Etruscan town of Arezzo and ending nearly in Florence, the peak city of the renaissance. The route takes you through typical Tuscan countryside between the regions of Casentino and Chianti, In its central part the road encounters Castelfranco di Sopra.

During each season of the year the visitor is offered the rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves and mountain woods in a harmony of nature, history and culture. You are surrounded with farmhouses, and mansions with their own production of olive oil and wine, natural reserves, the mythical territory of the ‘Cliff Crags’, and the solemn simplicity of old monasteries and churches.

Here the traveller can embrace the particular atmosphere of the typical Tuscan gastronomy and enjoy the serenity of the area Castelfranco di Sopra in the province of Arezzo is situated in the Pratomagno side of the Valdarno (the valley of the river Arno, that continues on to Florence), at a height of 281 meters above sea level.

The village was founded at the end of the 13th century in a strategic location for the control of passing commercial trade and for military dominance of the surrounding area. It's layout, attributed to ‘Arnolfo di Cambio’ is a central square with straight and parallel streets enclosed by surrounding walls.Gatehouse towers were constructed at the end of the two main streets with a series of towers at intervals along the perimeter In the course of the centuries Castelfranco di Sopra has not suffered great changes within its walls, although only a small section of its external walls has survived, therefore little has been lost of the artistic legacy and the fascinating countryside remains.

This is a place where the art is in harmony with the beauty of the hillsides, the color of the olive groves and the fantastic forms of the sandstone crags (Balze). Situated only a short distance from Arezzo, Siena and Firenze,a world of art, history and tradition awaits the curious and unhurried traveller.
